Students Moved By Their Trip To Auschwitz

For a number of years we have worked with The Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) on their Lessons from Auschwitz (LFA) project.

For a number of years we have worked with The Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) on their Lessons from Auschwitz (LFA) project.  The project, which is heavily funded by HET, involves students attending two educational seminars, visiting Auschwitz and completing a project to educate others on the Holocaust.  When Mrs Mason announced the project she was overwhelmed with applications from enthusiastic Historians.  After writing an essay on why they wanted to take part in the project and how they would educate others Rebecca Christmas, Rebecca Forster, Ethan Riggs and Cameron Ralph were chosen to participate.

On Tuesday 13th November the four students, along with teacher Miss Newsome, left Sittingbourne at 3am and headed to Gatwick to travel to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland.  On the trip, they visited the village of Auschwitz, the Auschwitz 1 and Birkenau camps.  Miss Newsome described the trip as memorable and extremely emotional, “Both the HET and Auschwitz-Birkenau guides were outstanding, we were provided with all of the historical information in a clear and interesting way, and gave us an experience that we will truly remember for life.   Although the experience is, for obvious reasons, upsetting and shocking it is definitely one that everyone should do at least once in their lifetime. The tour was also very respectful, and with guides that were clearly very passionate about sharing their knowledge of this very important site”. Rebecca Christmas described the experience as “ Powerful!” she added “It was an amazing experience and one that will stay with me forever”.  The students will attend one more seminar in London and then start their project to educate others.
