Over the half term Mr Westby, was ‘encouraged’ by his sister Sarah, into running the Edinburgh Marathon in aid of the Macmillan Trust on 23rd May. Together with brother David, the siblings started training in February in memory of family members and friends who have been impacted by illness. Mr Westby had managed to build up his stamina to complete an easy 14 miles but then damaged his tendons in his left foot and had to take 5 weeks off training and so the maximum he had run, the week before the 26 mile event, was 7 miles! Although the first 16 miles were relatively easy, pushed on by appreciative crowds, he was honest in his recollection of the final 10 saying that as time went on each knee gradually gave in and he had to walk the final 6 miles in huge amounts of pain. Mr Westby said “Our family love going to new places and we thought that a marathon would be an interesting way to see a city that we hadn’t visited before and be able to do some good for others along the way. I felt a huge sense of relief when I reached the finish line but was in an immense amount of pain. However, I had an overwhelming sense of pride that, despite the training interruptions and huge urge to give up, I made it!” Mrs Palmer said “ Mr Westby is one of those members of staff who just lights up the room when he walks in. We couldn’t be more proud of his achievement and, together, the Westby’s raised an incredible £1000 for such an amazing cause. Our congratulations goes to all three of them”.
