Debating Duo Take On Westminster

On Thursday 17th November two Year 10 students, Robyn and Ben, visited Church House in Westminster to take part in a Mock EU Council.

This was a formal event with a similar structure to a real EU Council, and Fulston students were there representing the interests of Cyprus. Robyn and Ben had to prepare a speech and carry out detailed research into Cyprus' position on two proposals; should the U.K. still be a part of the EU arrest warrant once we leave the EU, and should the U.K. still be a part of the Erasmus scheme once we leave the EU?

This topics were challenging and Robyn and Ben were up against many A-level politics students, however they both took up the challenge with enthusiasm and passion for their cause.

After spending the morning in formal negotiations, they were sent to a long lunch and encouraged to 'back-channel' some deals and compromises! The afternoon session saw final remarks and closing speeches, Ben especially used this opportunity to really clarify a few points with other member states, and to make his position on the matter clear!

Robyn and Ben were exemplary students on the day, and really did Fulston proud. They showed a mature understanding for the debates, and both left recognising just how difficult and drawn out the UKs deals will be once we are negotiating them next year.
