Ski Trip - Bardonecchia 2013

Fulston Manor School held another very successful ski trip to Bardonecchia in the Italian Alps this year. We were very fortunate to experience some of the best snow conditions in the Alps for many years. Most days had clear blue skies and low temperatures: a perfect combination for skiing. We did have one day with low cloud and snow which everyone found challenging to ski in. As well as skiing the students also had a busy itinerary of après ski events.
We left school on Saturday 9th April 2013 at 10:00pm for the journey to Bardonecchia, some 980 km. Most of the journey was on French motorways through the night, but the final hour of the trip was through stunning mountain scenery and finished with a trip of 13km through the Frejus Tunnel, the fifth longest road tunnel in the world. We arrived in resort at 3:30 p.m. That day was spent unpacking, resting and getting our ski equipment; in the evening we had the first of our exquisite Italian meals.

The hotel was very impressive with an excellent range of facilities for students and staff to use. It had a gym, swimming pool, theatre, many different meeting rooms, a well-equipped games room and bar area. The meals were all outstanding at both lunch and dinner consisting of antipasto, pasta, main course and desert. All this came with a range of choices from buffet style servings; some members of the party managed four courses at each meal but not many! Breakfast also consisted of a huge choice including bacon and eggs every day.

We then experienced six days of skiing in close to perfect conditions on quiet sunny slopes that allowed our beginners to learn in safe conditions but challenged our advanced skiers on slopes that hosted some of the 2006 winter Olympic ski and snow board events. The views around the resort either looking up at the mountains, down at the village from the top of the slope, or across the Alps to other mountain ranges, were very impressive and should stay in everyone’s minds long after the trip.

We had a full range of evening activities during the week that included: the famous Italian “cracking of the eggs”, an international clown in the hotel’s theatre, an Easter egg hunt, crepe and pizza nights, movie night, presentations and of course a disco on the last night.

The week was very busy with four hours skiing a day and a busy program of evening activities. The six days in resort went by very quickly. After the final day’s skiing we had our last meal in the hotel and boarded the coach at 8:00 pm for the return journey to England. Most people were asleep on the coach very quickly and didn`t wake until we reached Calais!

All in all, it was a fantastic trip, thoroughly enjoyed by staff and students alike.
