Jodi Collins, 15, is certainly one to watch in the world of Power Lifting. The petite Year 10 student only took up the sport 14 months ago and recently took part in a South East Power Lifting Competition in Dover, cheered on by her family and coach, Kieran Price. To look at Jodi you would never guess that her strength would see her break four U16s and four U18 South East records during the competition. Not only that, Jodi also broke 5 unofficial British records! She lifted 102.5kg at squats, 61kg Bench and 131kg dead weight. Jodi trains at Milton Regis Fitness Centre and is hoping that her passion for lifting will be recognised as an Olympic sport in years to come. Lifting such heavy weights is even more astounding as Jodi spent two weeks at Great Ormond Street Hospital when she was five where they worked on her fallen arches with weight training to build up her strength. She said “I can remember being in hospital and the nurses saying how determined I was and that I had encouraged everyone else there to improve their own fitness and strength. I remember feeling good about that and I’m also pretty proud of myself for what I am doing now. But I did cry when I saw my Grandad crying with happiness at my weightlifting and then everyone else just joined in with the tears!”
