Fulston Manor School (FMS) has said that it will “do more, more quickly” to secure improved outcomes for students following the publication of its most recent Ofsted inspection.
FMS was inspected in late April by the school’s inspectorate. While areas of strengths were identified, Ofsted concluded that “over time, many pupils have not achieved as well as they should have.”
Susie Burden, the School’s Executive Headteacher, said: “We hope that there is much in the report that our parents will recognise and will know to be true of our school.
“The inspectors found many strengths in our sixth form provision, praised our comprehensive programme of personal development and found that our pupils speak confidently about the sense of family and community that they feel by being part of this school.
"As a result, we are pleased that the inspectors found that Attendance and Behaviour, Personal Development and Wellbeing and our Post 16 Provision were all deemed to be at the Expected Standard – which feels like a much tougher bar to reach than Good under the old framework.
"However, the inspection team also had concerns about the outcomes that our students achieve in Key Stage 4. Although they found that we have a “well sequenced” curriculum that has “ambitious aims”, they rightly focused on the fact that there are a number of factors that mean that achievement at GCSE falls short of where it should be.”
The school was graded as Needs Attention in Curriculum and Teaching and Inclusion and that Urgent Improvement is needed in the areas of Achievement and Leadership and Governance.
Richard Acton, Chair of Trustees, said: “The most important thing that we can do for our school and our community is to continue to address the issues that have been raised. We know that we collectively need to do more, more quickly, to secure improved outcomes for students.
“This work is already well underway. Since the inspection, we have already taken significant steps to strengthen governance, secure leadership support and ensure greater consistency of teaching across all subjects.
“We will do whatever is needed to continue to be the very best school for the community that we are proud to serve.”
The Urgent Attention judgements mean that the school has been placed into Special Measures by Ofsted.
Susie Burden added: “This is something that we welcome, as it means there will be greater scrutiny of our work and additional support will be available. We are absolutely committed to working with external partners to accelerate improvement so that our young people get the best possible education and exam results.”
