Ski Bormio 2017
Fulston Manor School held another very successful ski trip to Bormio in the Italian Alps this year. We were very fortunate to experience some very good snow conditions especially at higher altitudes. The resort of Bormio has a top height of just over 3000 metres, which makes this a very snow sure. Most days were warm and sunny although we did have a couple of cloudy days and even some snowfall. As well as skiing, the students also held a busy itinerary of Après ski events.
We left school on Friday 31st March 2017 at 9:30pm for the journey to Bormio some 1285 km. Most of the journey was on French motorways through the night but the final part of the trip took us of the through the stunning mountain scenery in Switzerland and then into Italy. We arrived late Saturday afternoon and settled into our hotel, which was located 2000 metres in the mountains. That day was spent unpacking resting and in the evening, we had the first of our very impressive Italian meals.The hotel was very impressive with an excellent range of facilities for students and staff to use as well as impressive views of the mountains. It had a range of meeting rooms, a well-equipped games room and bar area. The meals were all outstanding at both lunch and dinner all consisted of Antipasto, Pasta, main courses and finally desert or fruit. The hotel sat on the slopes next to the nursery slopes. Ski equipment was collected shops next to the hotel.
On the first day, we were separated into skiing groups; collecting our skis, helmets and poles, we started to descend upon the snow and spent six fun-filled days getting to grips with the piste. The resort had quiet sunny slopes that allowed our beginners’ to learn in safe conditions but challenged our advanced skiers on slopes that hosted multiple world championship and world cup events. Some of the views around the resort either looking up at the mountains, looking down at the village from the top of the slope or across the Alps to other mountain ranges were very impressive and should stay in everyone’s mind long after the trip. The most impressive views were from the café at the top of the resort at 3000m. On the third day all, the students met at the café at the end of their ski lessons and then took the cable car back to the hotel.
We had a full range of evening activities during the week that included ice skating, shopping in Bormio town, pizza night, Bowling, presentations and of course disco with Karaoke.The week was very busy with four hours skiing a day and a busy program of evening activities, and the six days in resort went by very quickly. After the final days skiing, we had our last meal in the hotel and boarded the coach at 5:30 pm for the return journey to England. Most people were asleep on the coach very quickly and didn`t wake until we reached Dunkirk.
The students were fantastic during the week; chair lift fears were conquered, off-piste adventures were had. The week was full of tumbles, fun and adventure and was enjoyed by both students and staff alike.
